New X-Men Cast Announced

Reading Time: 4 minutes

2014’s X-Men: Days of Future past was an excellent movie that gave us an insight into how Byran Singer was capable of building out the X-Men universe beyond what we have seen already. The movie had everything you might have wanted from a movie sequel as a comic book fan: drama, comedy, action and continued expansion upon an already established mythology. what it also did, to everyone’s delight, is reset the entire series just enough so that we can continue with the series as it is while allowing Singer and the team to create a brand new universe for us to experience. The end of the movie already let us know who will be next up for Messrs Jackmand, McAvoy and Fassbender to face off against and since then we’ve been drip fed key details of the rest of the cast.

We know that the next movie will be titled X-Men: Apocalypse and will featured our evolving team of mutants go up against probably one of the franchises greatest ever threats, the first mutant Apocalypse, and now we know that we’ll be getting some familiar characters but in new guises. Oscar Isaac will take on the iconic role, adding another one to his ever burgeoning list of star making characters, of En Sabah Nur or as he is better known, Apocalypse. That was announced last year but over the last number of weeks we’ve got a whole host of additional names added to that list.

New X-Men Cast

Sophie Turner as Jean Gery

One of the many upcoming stars of Game of Thrones, Turners turn as Sansa Stark has gone under the radar of late but with some suggesting that she might be due to take on a key role from the book series could we get to see her acting chops put to the test? She certainly has a striking look that is sure to bring to screen the character who will become the focus point for some of the major arcs that could be developed further in the franchise. Jean Grey is one of the linchpin of the X-Men universe with her relationship with Scott Summers one of the most compelling parts of the comic books appeal for many fans.

Tye Sheridan as Scott Summers / Cyclops

Speaking of Scott Summers, James Marsden was a great choice for the role for the first movie but he was undeserved by a role that was underdeveloped over the course of three movies. But now the character will get a chance to shine in the form of Tye Sheridan. If you haven’t had a chance to check out Mud then you should. This actor is a force of nature and this is the kind of role that will bring him to mainstream attention. Summers is the X-Men in eyes of the legions of fans who read the comic book. In recent years his role as the leader of the team has seen him do some unspeakable things to ensure the survival of his people and this sort of character could be something this series needs. A character who is militaristic but a true believer in everything that Professor X professes. Sheridan could turn out to be the best of the new X-Men cast announced.

Alexandra Shipp as Ororo Munroe / Storm

I don’t know much about the actress in question but the character she has signed up to play is another key member of the X-Men family. Storm is second in command to Cyclops and as such will have a key role to play in the rest of the series. Although some are stating that this is the end of the trilogy for this specific cast it can be assumed that if this series is to continue it will be with a focus on these young characters being introduced.

Kodi Smit-McPhee as Kurt Wagner / Nightcrawler

Each character in the X-Men universe has their supporters and it is difficult to pick one character that has been undeserved more than another in the series so far. Nightcrawler is one though. His introduction in X-Men 2 was, and still is, one of the best opening sequences in any movie of the last 20 years. But then the character, as played by Alan Cumming, disappeared from the series after that one movie. We’re not saying he deserved his own movie but he deserved better. Smit-McPhee is another up and coming actor who is a great addition to this cast and you can see his look fitting well with the character. Nightcrawler brings something to the movie that we’ve not seen before, an unpredictability and visual effects heavy power that, if done properly, could be brilliantly to see in action.

Ben Hardy as undisclosed

Hardy’s name has been bandied about for a long time in relation to this movie. There was a rumor that he would be playing Scott Summers but when Tye Sheridan was announced many just assumed that was that for the Eastender’s star. But then it was announced that he was joining the cast in an undisclosed role. What that role is nobody actually knows. There could be a chance that he will be playing Warren Worthington who is better known as Angel or Archangel. I have to admit that I’ve never seen him during his time in Eastenders but if he was in contention to originally play the leader of the X-Men then whatever role he ends up getting is sure to be as pivotal.

Channing Tatum as Remy LeBeau / Gambit (unconfirmed)

We’ve already seen one incarnation of Gambit on the big screen but that was forgettable to say the least. Yes, Taylor Kitsch was maybe not the best choice to fill the role last time out but the character did feel shoehorned into a bad movie. Tatum is a completely different beast. Over the course of the last number of years he has gone from romantic movie fodder to leading man and it seems like he wouldn’t be stopped anytime soon. The character is another fan favorite who will be eagerly awaited by everyone. Looking forward to seeing what the character will be like on the big screen.

Humble start of the 1983 (guess which set) #XmenApocalypse We'll get there. #ProfessorX
