Rogue One, or Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, just released its first full trailer. Sound the alarms as it looks immense.
Gareth Edwards, director of Godzilla and Monsters, has big shoes to fill. Not only does he have to follow up The Force Awakens, he also has to introduce a new story to Star Wars cannon.
One many of us are aware of but know nothing about. Add in the fact that many movie fans are fearing that the reported reshoots for Rogue One were bad news.
But you may have just felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in excitement as their fears over the movie were suddenly silenced.
The new trailer was packed to the brim with scenes that showed what we can expect come this December.
Stand Out Moments
Firstly, we get to see Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso speaking to both Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera and Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma.
Star Wars fans will recognise both names as being key parts of the series mythology. Their presence in Rogue One gives us more of an idea of how this series represents a link to the past, present, and future of the story.
The trailer begins with an amazing shot of an Imperial Star Destroyer hovering over the city.
Next up is the new planets being introduced to Star Wars cannon. The focus of Rogue One will be on the newly introduced Jedha. A planet described as “a Mecca for those who aren’t Sith or Jedi but believe in the spirituality of the force”.
The continues with shots introducing the other members of the rebel team we get to spend time with in the movie.
The standout moment had to the sequence featuring Blind warrior Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen). A blind character challenging his force sensitivity while taking down a group of stormtroopers.
Next up appears to be the pivotal planet of Scarif. Reports describe the planet as a “secluded world,” where “huge tracts of land were excavated to build ships and supply the Death Star”.
We see the rebels land via their new to the franchise Y-wing, take on imperial troops in beach battles and introduce us to AT-ATC’s.
These new troops transport systems scenes also have the most bad ass sequence associated with them. Namely, Baze Malbus (Wen Jiang) taking one down with a rocket launcher. Definitely one of the best shots, no pun intended, of the trailer.
Finally, Darth Vader will be making an appearance in the movie. His quick appearance gave the trailer that extra fanboy moment that was awesome.
Movie goers might be unaware that this movie is not a sequel to The Force Awakens but a stand alone piece. The presence of the dark lord of the sith is there for one reason. To give everyone an idead where in the franchise timeline this movie is taking place.
I am eagerly awaiting Rogue One as it looks like it could be the beginning of a new approach to Star Wars movies. This trailer definitely gave the impression that the wait will be worth it. What do you think? Sound off in the comments below.
