There was a time when any film starring Johnny Depp would be eagerly awaited and would be one of the most anticipated events of any years cinema release calendar but recent releases have slowly demolished the goodwill he was once afforded. But the first trailer for “Black Mass” shows that perhaps he could be about to recapture some of his once recognised movie icon mystique.
The name Whitey Bulger is probably not recognised over here too much but his name has become synonymous with the South Boston criminal fraternity. So infamous is Bulger that he was on the FBI most wanted list for over 10 years this after he was had acted as an informant for them for nearly 20 years between 1975 and 1994. This is just one of the many incredibly interesting life points that could be touched upon by the movie.
If his character history sounds somewhat familiar to movie fans it should because Jack Nicholson’s character in “The Departed” was loosely based on Bulger’s double life.
The actual Black Mass trailer doesn’t actually offer up a lot bar present the main players and a little bit of build up for what we can expect in the movie. What we do get is an intense scene between Depp and David Harbour that sparkled from the off. Harbour is one of those actors who has recently popped up in a lot of movies but only in a small number of scenes case in point being both The Equalizer and A Walk Among the Tombstones.
Although Depp may be getting top billing he is surrounded by a brilliant cast. Names including Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton, Corey Stoll, Adam Scott and Peter Sarsgaard surround Depp in key roles. The plot itself seems pretty straightforward but thanks in part to the cast and Bulger himself this movie is shaping up to be one of the most interesting movies coming out this year.
The true story of Whitey Bulger, the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his turf.
